Agenda for Justice – Backgrounders

  • July 27, 2017

Lawyers are in a unique position to see the practical impact of law and to bring this important optic to the public discourse. Through its advocacy work, Canadian Bar Association members contribute an important perspective to law reform in Canada and internationally - the view of those in the trenches of law, who know how it works on a day-to-day basis.

CBA brings a "rule of law" perspective to the public debate. Whether on behalf of the legal profession as a whole, or focusing on a specialized area of law, CBA's mandate includes issues in the professional interest and the public interest. Some recurring themes include:

  • Independence of the legal profession and the judiciary
  • Solicitor-client privilege
  • Lawyers' professional interests
  • Access to justice
  • Fairness in the legal system

Most Albertans don't think about the justice system unless they are facing a day in court, but it is an important underpinning of a healthy functioning democracy. In 2015, CBA Alberta introduced and created its Agenda for Justice to be able to speak to government and Albertans about the important justice issues currently facing our province. Justice does matter and Albertans have a right to an effective justice system, that actively supports the ability of their families, business and communities to evolve and thrive.
