CBA Alberta Access to Justice Committee releases Limited Scope Retainer report

  • December 17, 2013

(Calgary, AB) – The Access to Justice Committee of the Canadian Bar Association Alberta Branch has released a special electronic publication devoted to the topic of Limited Scope Retainers. The concept of limited scope retainers can be an attractive option for individuals seeking legal representation who may not be able to afford the cost of hiring lawyer on a general retainer. Also referred to as “unbundled legal services”, limited scope retainers involve a lawyer providing services for part, but not all, of a client’s matter. This publication aims to provide discussion and analysis about the topic, as well as advice for practitioners wishing to incorporate limited scope retainers into their practice. “Access to justice is quickly becoming one of the most important issues facing the legal profession today,” says Ola Malik, Chair of the Alberta Branch Access to Justice Committee. “By educating legal professionals across the country about concepts such as Limited Scope Retainers, we are ensuring that Canadians have options for accessing affordable legal services.” The Access to Justice Committee also extends its thanks to the Law Society of Alberta, and Alberta Justice and Solicitor General for their participation and input in this project. The publication can be viewed in its entirety online. (Create a new Resource under Resources.
