CBA Alberta statement on the results of the special meeting of the Law Society of Alberta

  • February 08, 2023

The Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch (CBA Alberta) is pleased with the outcome of the February 6, 2023 special meeting of the Law Society of Alberta, at which the resolution to repeal Rule 67.4 was defeated.

The CBA first launched The Path program to our members in April 2020, as an expression of our committed response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, with the intention of increasing awareness among the profession of the legacy of the Indian Residential School system and to increase cultural competency as it relates to the Indigenous community. Prior to the Law Society of Alberta introducing their Indigenous Cultural Competency Education, nearly 200 Alberta lawyers, judges and students had participated in the CBA’s version of The Path.

We strongly believe that the Law Society, as the regulator, has the authority to determine which learning activities, including programs like The Path, are necessary to maintain a high professional standard and the integrity of the legal profession as one that serves the public interest. We thank all our members who took the time out of their busy schedules to attend the special meeting of the Law Society and make their voices heard.
