OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY

Under the supervision of General Counsel, the Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice to the administration on a wide variety of issues including, interpretation of statutes, regulations, policies, administrative procedures, commercial transactions, employment, school and litigation matters. The incumbent may, on occasion, be required to represent the interests of the Board before various levels of court, boards of arbitration, boards of reference and various tribunals.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provides legal opinions, advice and recommendations under the direction of General Counsel and at times, Assistant General Counsel, on various Division Department and school matters
  • Analyzes and interprets legislation, regulations, administrative procedures and policies, making recommendations to General Counsel as required
  • Identifies legal concerns and conducts research proactively
  • With the approval of General Counsel represents the Board before various level of courts, boards and other administrative bodies
  • Under the direction of General Counsel advises administration on the management of risk from a legal perspective
  • With the approval of General Counsel makes referrals to external agencies or firms on specialized cases

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in law from an accredited institution

Experience:

  • One (1) to two (2) years’ experience in general practice including labour and human rights law, education law, privacy law and commercial contract matters
  • Experience with public sector organizations, in particular with educational institutions

Certification/ Licenses:

  • Licensed to practice law in Alberta
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta

Other Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication, collaborative decision-making and prioritization skills
  • professional judgment and the ability to meet tight deadlines
