What you will do
The Office of Parliamentary Counsel (OPC) provides comprehensive and impartial legal advice and legislative drafting services to the Speaker, presiding officers, Members of the Legislative Assembly and the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly. The OPC is also the Legislative Assembly Office’s in-house legal counsel.
The OPC is seeking a Legal Counsel in an entry-level position. In this fast-paced environment you will be providing legal advice to the Law Clerk, Parliamentary Counsel and LAO managers, primarily in the following areas: constitutional law, statutory interpretation, contract law, procurement law, leasing, employment law, information access and privacy law and intellectual property law.

The keys to success in this role are your interpersonal skills and ability to communicate legal information and advice in a clear and effective manner coupled with strong and effective proofreading and written composition skills.
You will also bring solid organizational skills and a meticulous attention to detail as well as a focus on providing client-centered services.
Your professionalism, judgment and tact ensure that you align with the OPC’s unyielding dedication to ensuring that the Legislative Assembly of Alberta is provided the highest standard of nonpartisan legal and legislative drafting services.
What you bring
Your background should include a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB), active membership in or immediate eligibility for entrance to the Law Society of Alberta plus up to 5 years of professional legal experience.
Your past work experience includes legal research and contract, lease or legislative drafting.
Knowledge of the Westminster parliamentary process and the composition and structure of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta is considered an asset.

The salary range for this position is $79,752 - $102,744 dependent on qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is also available.
