Nominations for the CBA Alberta Board Secretary and Directors positions open on Monday, April 1, 2024 and close on Friday, April 26, 2024 at noon.

The election, if required will be held from May 1 to May 22, 2024.

Branch Secretary

This year, nominations for the Branch Secretary position are being accepted from North Alberta. The Secretary is the first step on the five-rung Executive Committee ladder, which progresses in annual succession from Secretary to Treasurer to Vice President to President to Past President. The Secretary is elected to a five-year term beginning September 1, 2024 and expiring August 31, 2029.

In addition to meeting the requirement of residing in the North portion of Alberta, the Secretary must be a member in good standing with the Canadian Bar Association. Former members of the CBA Alberta Board or the CBA National Board must wait one year before running as Secretary. Members cannot run for both the office of the Secretary and the Board at the same time.

Board Directors

Four of the eight current Board of Directors positions are now open, including 2 Directors at Large, South Young Lawyer Director at Large, and North (outside Edmonton) Director at Large. These Board Directors are elected to a two-year term beginning September 1, 2024 and expiring August 31, 2026.

Board members must members in good standing with the Canadian Bar Association and reside in the Province of Alberta. Former members of the CBA Alberta Executive Committee and former directors of the CBA National Board must wait two years before they are eligible to run for the Board. Members cannot run for both the office of Secretary and the Board at the same time.

Nominations and elections for the CBA Alberta Board Secretary and Directors positions run annually in April and May, or as needed. All regular and scholar members of the association are eligible for nomination for these positions (with select Board of Directors positions reserved for young lawyers and members practicing outside of Calgary and Edmonton), and to cast a ballot. Voters must be active members in the association in good standing as of April 30, 2024 in order to be eligible to cast a ballot. Read more about voting eligibility in Section 2.5 of the Branch Bylaws.
