On August 2, CBA Alberta and the Alberta Child & Youth Law Sections sent a letter to Premier Danielle Smith and other provincial government and opposition representatives, calling on the government to create a detailed action plan to implement the obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch (CBA Alberta) congratulates The Honourable Mickey Amery on his appointment as Minister of Justice for Alberta, and welcomes several of the priorities outlined in his mandate letter, released yesterday.  

The following new members will join the CBA Board of Directors on September 1, 2023, and start two-year terms: Bianca Kratt – Alberta; Ken Mandzuik – Manitoba; Loreley Berra Chekay K.C. – Saskatchewan.

I’ve received emails from many of you about lots of PD topics. One issue that has come up several times is the best format for Section meetings – in person or virtual.

A sustainable and accessible justice system as an important priority for Albertans according to public opinion research undertaken by Nanos Research on behalf of CBA Alberta. CBA Alberta is calling on all political parties in the provincial election to commit to increasing resources for the justice system. The justice system has been systemically underfunded by successive governments, and while recent investments are welcome, there is still more to be done.

Mental Health Week was established in 1951 by the Canadian Mental Health Association. It is observed annually during the first full week of May. This year, Mental Health Week is May 1 – May 7, 2023.

The Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch (CBA Alberta) recognizes the commitments made by the Government of Alberta in Budget 2023 to funding justice initiatives.

CBA Alberta is pleased to announce that Susan Borsic K.C. will be its new Manager of Professional Development commencing on March 6, 2023. This is a brand-new position, which Susan will be the first to hold.
